The situation at Kuwait Bay is getting worse as drainage water from the Mishref sewage plant has been flowing directly into the sea
over the last four days due to the breakdown of all the distillation units in the plant, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily. Contrary to Minister of Public Works and State Minister for Municipality Affairs Dr Fadhel Safar’s recent statement, the daily discovered, after inspecting the area, that drainage water is still being pumped into the sea through the Al-Jahra pipes.
Foul smell is also emanating from the surrounding areas due to the increasing level of pollution. At Doha Kathema area in Kuwait Bay, a black line is visible at the beach, in addition to a large number of insects like red flies and mosquitoes in the contaminated areas. Dead fish and birds were also seen lying on the seashore due to the poisonous chemicals coming from the untreated drainage water. Since the drainage pipes that pump dirty water into Kuwait Bay are close to the water purification plant in Jahra, pollution might go deep into the seawater where the filtered water are taken by the plant that produces drinking water, the daily added.
