The Environmental Affairs Committee of the Municipal Council will issue a number of recommendations over the malfunction at the Mishref sewage treatment station, said the head of the committee Tuesday.
The statement of Dr. Abdulkareem Saleem came after an urgent meeting held by the committee with the attendance of Director General of the Environment Public Authority (EPA) Dr. Salah AlـMudhi and representatives of Kuwait University (KU) and the Public Works Ministry. He said that the recommendations will aim to support the efforts of the Public Works Ministry in trying to solve the problem, adding that the committee will call for reconsidering stations'' designs and the formation of emergency teams that are able to deal with such catastrophes. Saleem said that AlـMudhi informed the committee that a Korean company specialized in monitoring marine pollution was examining sea water samples regularly, and that a French company will be assisting it soon in dealing with the pollutants. Meanwhile, AlـMudhi said that he informed the committee that the pollution caused by the pumping of sewage waste in the sea will not have environmental effects such as the killing of fish and marine creatures. However, he warned that it was possible that algal bloom (red tide) would occur because organic wastes encourage the growth of bacteria, causing the phenomenon.
