The Minister of Electricity and Water Dr Bader Shibeeb Al-Shuraiaan has announced
that the Ministry is working towards collaborating with the private sector for electricity and water projects, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily. Al-Shuraiaan said the partnership can be made possible through the establishment of shareholding companies or under the Build, Operate, Transfer (BOT) system. He added the pre-paid meter billing system, set to be floated immediately after the Eid holiday, hopes to be executed before next summer. Al-Shuraiaan said the project might be minor in nature, but is a step in the right direction. He promised that the billing system will assist in encouraging consumers to conserve power. He informed that the projected Subbiya power station is the first to be carried out after the one that was approved in 1988 and executed in 1998. “The project is worth KD 770 million and we will not allow those who are against the project due to parochial interests to have their way”, the Minister assured.
