Kuwait's Ministry of Public Works has extended on Thursday a 30 square meter submarine network off the coasts of Al-Mesilah Area in a bid to increase oxygen in the sea waters after the malfunction of Meshref Sewage Plant.
The ministry is conducting this experiment in the sewage waterway in order to contain the pollution crisis of late August, director of the ministry's environment division Eng. Baqer Darwish told KUNA. "The experiment is being made in cooperation with Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) and the Environment Public Authority (EPA)," he said. "The network consists of pipes connected to each other and to a compressor which will inject air to the sea water," Darwish pointed out. "The experiment, recommended by KISR, aims to increase oxygen in the water though the recent tests, conducted also by KISR, proved that oxygen ratio had not gone down "This can be considered a precautionary measure to avoid any possible environment hazard," he explained, noting that the ministry was keen on the safety of the country's environment. It proven successful, the experiment will be duplicated in other sewage waterways, Darwish disclosed. The event was attended by Chairperson of Kuwait Voluntary Work Center (KVOC) Sheikha Amthal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and KISR representative Dr. Abdul-Nabi Al-Ghadhban. A joint team has been formed by the ministry, KISR and EPA to review the results of the experiment and assess the marine pollution after the breakdown in Mishref sewage station three years after the plant got operational.
