The diving team of the Kuwaiti Environment Protection Society has installed nine stationary buoys as part of measures to protect coral reefs around Umm Al-Maradem island.
The team said in a statement on Sunday the buoys were set up to discourage boaters from dumping anchors and other metallic ordnance onto the reefs. The divers are proceeding the mission to protect these reefs, including salvage of seven tons of harmful waste harming the reefs around the island. The team is also involved in other operations, namely maintenance of 130 cement reserves, photographing the reefs in the territorial waters and monitoring the wild life. The buoys can be used by fishing and recreational-dive vessels. They offer boaters an environmentally friendly alternative to anchors. Throughout the years, coral reefs have suffered damage from boat anchors. The buoys around the coral reef islands allow vessels to simply approach and hook their lines to the buoy pickup line without causing any disruption to underwater life. As well as being a host for undersea biodiversity, the coral islands serve as critical nesting sites for birds and egg-hatching habitats for endangered species.
