Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic Affairs at the Ministry of Interior Major General Mahmoud Al-Dousasri has forwarded a proposal to review
procedures for granting driving licenses to expatriates to Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Khalid Al-Sabah who, in turn, referred it to the Legal Department for further study, reports Al-Anba daily. Al-Dousari explained this proposal is aimed at rectifying flaws in the current law, especially since some expatriates have been trying to get around this law to obtain a driving license. His recommendations include linking the license to the residency period and sponsor’s name. He said many employers have complained about the practice of some expatriate workers, who join other companies after getting the license. Under his proposal, expatriates, who need to renew their residency permits, should submit documents, confirming their right to use the license in case they transfer to other sponsors. Expatriates are not required to undergo another driving test once the license is withdrawn. He went on to say the proposal covers not only the new applicants but also the expatriates with a valid license, affirming there are mechanisms to organize the issuance of driving licenses upon approval of this scheme.
