The rain season is expected to start in Kuwait and the Arab peninsula on Thursday, Meteorologist Issa Ramadan said Tuesday, indicating that the local term used to describe the season is "AlـWasim."
The Wasim is the early rain season which helps desert plants thrive and grow, according to Ramadan. He further noted the importance of this season, particularly to ancient Arabs, where they used to rely on this season to feed their cattle and sustain a livelihood. Among the other significances that rain provides in addition to the growth of seeds buried under the sand, is that it also assists the plants to stabilize the soil and reduce sandstorms. Plants that grow during the months of December and January are temperatureـsensitive and stop growing during the nights due to the decrease in temperature, he added. By the time warm southeast wind hits back, plants will be fully grown, he said. As for truffles, Ramadan said that their growth depended on physiological, biological, and environmental factors such as the Wasim rains. In comparison, the current Sfiri season is a season of allergies, flues, eye infections and discomfort. This is due to increase of pollen and pollutants rates, as well as high temperatures, he said. The meteorologist asked people to avoid exposure to quick change of temperatures throughout OctoberـNovember in the Arab region in general.
