A Malaysian official on Sunday extolled Kuwait's role in the alleviation of food shortage in the Muslim world by creating a financial fund for the purpose.
The fund was announced by Kuwait during the 4th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIFE) held in Kuwait in 2008. Speaking to KUNA, WIFE Secretary-General Ahmad Fawzi said His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah had put an unforgettable mark for overcoming economic crises, including the recent food shortage, by donating USD 100 million for the fund. This generous initiative reflected Kuwait's spirit of solidarity and cooperation, especially in humanitarian and social fields, he said, noting that Kuwait was the only Arab country to play host to the forum. The joint international program for guiding young leaders, which was launched during the Kuwait-hosted forum, is now bearing fruit, Fawzi said, pointing to the funding of small and medium-sized projects in the Muslim world. Kazakhstan and Oman are going to play host to the seventh and eighth forum in 2011 and 2012 respectively, he noted. The World Islamic Economic Forum is a global conference that acts as an international business platform where the business sectors of the Muslim world meet for business opportunities and together with the government leaders, act as a hub where policy proposals on economic development can be formulated.
