Kuwait Science Club announced this year's tenth edition of the Sheikha Fadia Saad Al-Sabah scientific accomplishment competition for girls in the Arab Gulf region on Friday.
The competition which was held locally, broadened to the Gulf level in its second year upon an initiative by the competition's founder and sponsor Sheikha Fadia. Chief organizer and Head of the Future Scientists Department at Kuwait Science Club Narjas Al-Nam during a meeting with 52 girls' high schools in Kuwait said that the aim of the competition is to find and support young female thinkers and innovators. She added that Sheikha Fareeha plans to further expand the award internationally by 2012. In cooperation with the Ministry of Education, the competition is held each year under a theme that focuses on problems in that specific era. First placed winners are awarded KD 400, followed by KD 150 for second place, KD 100 for third and fourth places and KD 70 for sixth to 12th placed winners. Head of the competition's technical committee Fouzan Al-Faris said that the competition this year involves the creation of a solution targeted at the protection of the environment. The solution should include a clear concept with safety standards mentioned, its cost and feasibility as well as what the creation will provide to the community and the outside world. Presentation should be accurate, coherent and should be backed by evidence to prove the suitability of data. The concept should also be identified in a report written according to international report standards and should be accompanied by a CD, Al-Faris concluded. - Kuna
