Kuwait's Scientific Centre celebrated the 18th anniversary of extinguishing the last oil well fire as a result of the 1990 Iraqi invasion on Friday.
Kuwaiti Engineer Sara Akbar, the only woman to participate in the extinguishing efforts back then who was invited to attend the celebration, said in a statement that the memory is a pride for all Kuwaitis and illustrates the nation's ability to achieve many things under these circumstances. She said the extinguishing team was formed during the liberation period and includes 29 firefighting engineers. The team was split into two groups, one in charge of putting out fires while the other was tasked with getting the oil wells running again for production to make up for losses made during the invasion. The experience was a challenge and a brave attempt by the team, and a lot of effort was put into the task amid a sence of cooperation and determination. The team, also backed by international counterparts, managed to put out 42 oil well fires, she noted. The Scientific Centre will be showing the film 'Fires of Kuwait' at its IMAX theatre on the day. The anniversary coincides with the United Nations' International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict.
