A senior Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor (MSAL) official has called for the MSAL and the Ministry of Interior to form a joint committee
with the aim of establishing a care center for young women over 18 who are subject to cruelty in the family home. Abdullatif Al-Sannan, the head of the MSAL's Juvenile Care Unit, said that the main reason for the presence of female residents in juvenile care facilities was persistent running away from home, indicating that some teenagers suffer from identity crises that can lead to misbehavior and absconding from the family home, as well as family rows. Al-Sannan stressed that the care provided to residents of Kuwait's juvenile care facilities is based on several factors, offering not only practical care, but a comprehensive program developed and administered by social and psychiatric experts who supervise various cultural, sporting, religious and entertainment activities. The department head said that all the staff in his department and in Kuwait's juvenile care facilities strive to ensure that the highest possible level of care is provided to the young residents, as well as providing them with all the necessary material provisions and ensuring that they have access to suitable medical and psychiatric care, which he said forms a cornerstone in dealing with young people in care, he stressed. On the subject of negative incidents at care facilities, Al-Sannan said that the biggest obstacles faced by staff are generally concerned with the lack of commitment to a controlled schedule shown by some young residents, while other youths fight with members of the technical and administrative staff. The department head denied that any sexually-related offenses take place in these facilities, saying that close monitoring by committed staff prevents the possibility of any such incidents taking place. - Kuwait Times
